The Missing Halloween

Since I missed posting about a ton of things over the last year I figured these next few posts should probably be dedicated to some of the things I skipped. And of course as usual I went all out for Halloween. You can see past Halloween posts here, and here… oh and here… maybe here too!

Working in the beauty industry gives me a bit of a free pass when it comes to costumes and I tend to go a little hog wild. This year was no exception.

There was the pretty and demure flapper

The not so pretty plague ridden

The ethereal and Instagram inspired

The traditional with a twist

The traditional without a twist

And it wasn’t just my face that got the treatment, I played around with liquid latex this year and figured out how to do some interesting scarification and veining patterns

Oh and this little experiment was preformed as hurricane Irma was attempting to blow our house away, you can hear the roof creaking in the background. I’ll have more updates on what I failed to post in the coming weeks as well as a few new projects in the works. Let me know if you would like to see more makeup looks.

Searching through my history I noticed I didn’t really post much of what I wore last year except on Instagram, you can follow me there @chelle_saint

What you missed

Or should I say what I missed.

I’ve been gone over a year and a lot has happened in that time! Where do I start?

Chronologically I suppose. So I started my own business. Quit my job to focus on my business. Got new flooring throughout the house.

Went to universal (again, see my first trip here).

We lost one of our fur babies, The Little made it to the ripe old age of 18.

We then got a new addition to the family, another little black terror named Sabbath. He was only 8weeks old in this picture and already about the size of Little when she was fully grown

I got a new job (still in the beauty industry). Hurricane Irma ran off with our roof so that got replaced. I closed up shop on my business after a year (no one ever tells you working from home means there’s no such thing as time off). Oh and I chopped off all my hair and decided to dye it funky colors… cause when you turn 30 you stop caring what people think

And in between all that I managed to repaint or redo my office, the library, the dining room, and the master bath! So I haven’t really been idol I’ve just neglected posting anything about it. So let’s see if I can get this started back up!!!

Hiatus

I’ve been away for a while, and actually I’ll probably be away for a good while longer.

Coincidentally, my last post was #100 in these chronicles  so it seems an apt place to take a break. The reason for this break? I’m getting ready to start my own business!!!

I will be a Lularoe dealer, not familiar with it? Check out their website here

And if you want you’re welcome to like my Facebook page here. I don’t have my storefront open yet so the shop now button will be inactive as of posting, I’m still in planning stages.

I’m sure I’ll still post periodically and I’ll be sure to have this months various Halloween makeup looks up at the end of the month. Here is a sneak peak for you.

But your always welcome to follow me on Instagram for crazy makeup year round @lularoemichellestpeter

And as a side note we finally got the gallery wall in our living room all finished out… it only took us 10 months 😛

Though we still have a massive stop sign to hang

Nevermore

It’s been a while since I’ve made a wreath.

My last square one was a hit so I thought I would try it for my Halloween wreath.

Bits and bobs and bullet casings? Why not, it’s Halloween right

I got the form wrapped with some “spooky” (read black and white) ribbon and lace

Now on with the, fiddley bits, detritus, found objects and other accoutrements.

Need a hand?

Topped off with a motion activated crow from the dollar store that’s annoying as hell.

I had to learn how to tie a noose this week, something I thought I would never do.

But it was worth it for my spooky wreath.

So Vain

I have a new Vanity!!!

Ok, like most things I own it isn’t “new”, just new to me. I received this desk as a hand me down gift from Mr. Smith’s aunt.

The sewing machine from it still works by the way.

I got it sanded this spring but work stopped as soon as the heat hit and we were off running around the country.

I finally got around to working on it in earnest these past couple of weeks.

The verticals supports and panels weren’t sanding out as well as I liked so I opted to paint them.

The top and the drawer fronts however  were a glorious grain so I decided to stain them as close as possible to my bedroom furniture.

We (my mother and I) lined the drawers with contact paper to protect them from the cosmetics that will go inside.

Beemer helped too

The hardware that was in the desk to begin with matched our furniture pretty well so I just cleaned it up and reattached it.

Before I set up my inordinate amount of makeup on the desk I placed a plastic sheet (it’s actually from a poster frame) on the desk to prevent makeup getting embedded in the wood grain.

I finally got to take all of my makeup out of bins and put it in real drawers in a proper vanity.

And yes that is a mechanics stool.

Screw this

In case you missed last weeks blog I had a project that was put on hold thanks to one stubborn screw that was giving me trouble. Thanks to some vice grips and wd40 that was sorted out and what follows is the project in its entirety.

We got this tiny rocking chair from my grandmother after it sat in her basement for goodness knows how long.

The upholstery was terrifying, there were dead spiders, but at least they were dead.

The wood base was still in excellent shape so there was no need to cut a new one. I used foam from an old mattress pad doubled over along with remnant fabric I had laying around to reupholster it.

I used the same method I did on our dining chairs which you can see here.

The chair itself was in pretty rough shape too, pegs were loose and screws were rusted. Hence the trouble we had getting the one screw out. The head rusted off leaving only the threaded portion.

We ended up drilling out around it, spraying wd40 in the hole and pulling it out with vice grips

I later filled the hole with wood filler so the new screw would have something to grip

After disassembling the chair it probably looked like a pile of fire wood to anyone else but the wood was still in excellent shape after a good sanding.

However even after sanding the pieces didn’t match. Some were a very light wood, some had a red hue to them. If I were staining it a dark color it wouldn’t have mattered but I wanted to keep the piece light so I opted to do a wash of paint.

I decided to try out target’s paint brand. I believe it’s made by valspar which is generally not my favorite but it worked well for the wash due to being a rather flat base.

Some new screws and wood glue to secure loose pegs and the chair is back to being a wonderful sturdy piece again. It’s an excellent edition to our library tucked over by the children’s books.

Hiccups

Or is it Hiccoughs I never know. Last week I posted about the struggles I was having with my anxiety and depression which I thought were compounded by the medications they had me on for my cystic acne.
We had a birthday party to go to this week, there was a bouncy house that I indulged in.

Run for your lives little children

There was also silly string. My husband decided when we got home to attack me with it. We have sword fights and nerf wars and silly string battles on a regular basis but that night after spending a day with people I didn’t know well and being very on edge It threw me into a full blown (hyperventilating, sobbing, convulsing, deer in the headlights) panic attack. It’s hilarious in retrospect, it was confusing and frustrating at the time and all I could think of were those stupid “triggered” memes.
Surprizingly after that night I was feeling upbeat enough to work on a project over Memorial Day but… it didn’t cooperate. It’s the tiny rocking chair I got while in Michigan. One of the screw heads broke off while disassembling it. It was rusted through and needed to be replaced anyway unfortunately, now we get to dig a broken screw out of the leg. It isn’t a huge deal but it put the breaks on that.

It’s going to take some more finagling.

But it’s not all bad

First look at this face!!! My skin has never looked better. It feels really raw and dry but it looks amazing.

Ummm #nofilter? And no makeup and if I’m going to toot my own horn the library is looking pretty good too.

Secondly  my dermatologist confirmed that either the accutane OR (given that aunt flo decided to visit in the middle of my cycle despite the little pills telling her there’s no room at the inn) the birth control  are compounding my mental health issues and that it’s definitely time to stop.

And the angels sang

Last I’ve decided to take a huge leap of faith in myself. I’ll have more about that mystery in later posts but I’m already incredibly excited about what is to come.
Oh… Okay… maybe just a little hint

Not worth it

In the last few weeks I’ve started and discarded about four blogs. Every time I start one I decide it’s not worth it. My excuse? Accutane.

In case you didn’t know I’ve been on accutane since April of this year to sort out some incredibly painful cystic acne.

How is it going? Great as far as my skin is concerned, everything else? Not so much

Accutane has been known to exacerbate anxiety and depression, both of which I have,  both of which I am unmedicated for. I have absolutely no objections to medication. I have had counseling and have slowly learned to live (cautiously) with my anxiety and recognize my depression and (let’s say) work away from it.

Unfortunately I’ve been finding that harder and harder to do. Panic attacks are getting more and more frequent. I barely want to leave the house let alone get out of bed and the fear that it’s not just the medicine exacerbating it is overwhealming.

I went off the medication both when we went to Orlando and for most of the time we were in Michigan but being with close friends or family I tend not to worry about my anxiety as much which in turn makes my anxiety better (if that made sense to you, you might have anxiety)

So I went off it for a few days this week as well just to see what it’s like at home not surrounded by friends. Actually I primarily did it because I had the worst headache I’ve ever had in my life (that’s saying something) brought on by dehydration which was in turn brought on in part due to the medication. Luckily my husband got me rehydrated relatively quickly and within 12 hours I was feeling quite well again. Within two days of not taking the medicine I was back to rummaging around in my craft room looking for something to do. On day three I had made plans for longer term projects. Something I haven’t done in a while. I’m only retrospectively realizing that it may be due to exacerbated anxiety and depression that I’ve not started any major projects (ok to be fair I took two days off when I did the bathroom too) or finished any small ones (and that bathroom mirror still isn’t hung) even regular household chores which I normally find comfort in the routine of have fallen by and become utterly neglected.

Unfortunately on the night of day three I dutifully took my dose of medicine. I have yet to be told by my dermatologist when my end date will be. Every time I ask she just avoids direct answers. I cannot go another month on this let alone three. My skin has been wonderful with it but eventually the side effects are simply too much. At this point I don’t care if the cysts come back worse than before, I miss myself more than I like my new skin.

Here is a cat to cheer you up.

Another blue bathroom

After a long absence our cats are always very happy to see us so this weeks post will be featuring a lot of this guy

We just got a new couch for our library he has adopted it as his own. The library is getting a minor makeover with the addition of some decor from our universal trip along with this new couch. I’ll post a bit about that later this year.

But for now I’ve repainted and redecorated our guest bathroom.

First it was a matter of stripping it down to the bare walls. Including taking down the horrible contractors special mirror you tend to find stuck to the walls in bathrooms. You know the kind I mean; no frame, same width as the vanity. They are super uninviting.

As soon as I started edging I got a visit.

I wanted to see how high he would go. All the way was the answer, then he couldn’t figure out how to get down so I had to rescue him.

There was one little spot above the toilet I couldn’t reach even with the ladder. It’s what I get for having 10′ ceilings. Luckily Mr. Smith is a foot taller than I.

On to finishing touches

All the stuff I hauled out had to go right back in.

The Beemer approved our new towels.
And tah dah the bathroom isn’t so boring anymore

As you can see the mirror isn’t hung yet, it’s just propped up. But that’s the advantage to having a husband that’s over 6′ I’ll just make him do it 😛 .

And if your wondering about the title, yes this is our second bathroom redo (much easier than the first) and the second blue one. You can find the first by clicking here

Where we left off

So we left off having visited the dunes, by the way these fulgurites are pretty cool. I found a tiny one once. They are very fragile and the inside looks like  murcury glass.

It was then onto one of my favorite places in the world. My grandmothers house. The above obviously isn’t her house. It’s the chicken coop. Though that’s an understatement since it’s now a completely finished building. Carpeted and all.

Even the chipmunks love my grandmothers back porch.

Our last day in Michigan we celebrated Mr. Smiths (along with two other’s) Birthday with friends and family

Then it was home through the dreaded state of Ohio. This is what it threw at us this time.

The best part of Ohio? The bridge to Kentucky.

As you can see, once we finally got home (after going through many more states, none as bad as Ohio, lol) our living room kind of exploded. We got lots of goodies while we were there including but not limited to a stop sign as you can see above. I promise it was legally purchased.

And look at these crochet cacti!

As promised I have lots of projects coming up. One of my side projects is going to be restoring a lot of old photographs. I don’t know as though I’ll blog about that, but it’s a fun hobby. I used to do a bit of photo restoration and it will be nice to have some family photos in our new house.

I’ve also started working on painting and decorating our guest bathroom. A family member made us beautiful monogrammed towels to go in it and it was just the push I needed to get it started. My office is currently full of all of the bits and bobs that will be going in there.

My grandmother also gave me this tiny rocker. It needs a lot of repair work and a new seat but I thought it was too cute to pass up when she offered it. As soon as my garage gets cooled down I’ll add it to the list of things to do in there.

That’s all from us for now.
